Rural women Farmers in Kano and Katsina States scale up from peasant farming to business cooperatives

2500 bags of groundnut, 500 traditional and modern groundnut oil extraction equipment distributed to 200 women groups across Kano and Katsina state to mark A SCALE UP of women’s project to a more business oriented income generating activities.

The beneficiaries were trained in group and business management as well as simple accounting and recording of their daily income before the handover of the credit in-kind materials distributed to them in a cooperative. This is in continuation of the 2 year partnership project between Katsina State government and WOFAN.

In their responses women said they have become empowered and are taken more seriously in their community. “ our men now discuss important family and community issues with us and give us opportunity  to also air our views which was not done in the past”, says Larai Yakubu from Batagarawa LGA of Katsina state.

 

In another development, Hajia Balaraba Sani   the leader of the groundnut oil group from Kumbotso LGA of Kano state said, they are now able to save for important issues such as health related issues and in the education of their children particularly the girl child.
