WOFAN Kick-starts Improved Rice production and processing Project with 5,010 Farmers and Female Processors in Kano State

WOFAN has commenced the implementation of a support project to target improved rice and groundnut production in four local government areas of Kano State. The project, which will benefit 5,010 male and female rice farmers and processors, is being implemented in partnership with the Competitive Africa Rice Initiative (CARI).

 The project is also collaborating with various stakeholders and important partners such as ICRISAT, KNARDA, associations of seed producers, agro millers, agricultural institutions, farmers’ groups, micro finance agencies, marketers, and so on, to boost rice and groundnut production to make farming more profitable to the farmers and processors.

Speaking during one of the mobilization meetings in Chakawa Community of Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area, WOFAN’s Executive Director (ED), Hajia Salamatu Garba explained that one of the main objectives of the project is to Increase production and quality of paddy rice as well as increased income through access to finance and market opportunities for the farmers formed into 167 cooperatives as a pilot project.

She also explained that in order to achieve the main objective, the WOFAN/CARI Project will focus on capacity building and support to increase efficiency of local rice sourcing, processing and marketing through structure value chain linkages, improved technology and process management as well as improved asset and financial management for all value chain actors.

The ED said, “The project desires to  facilitate the acquisition of appropriate skills for the diversification of income generation through the improved production and processing of groundnut, in addition to rice production and processing.”

In all the communities visited across the four benefiting LGAs, mobilization meetings facilitated by WOFAN were attended by traditional and religious leaders, relevant stakeholders, farmers’ cooperatives and community members.

The mobilization meeting in Chakawa community of Dawakin Kudu LGA  was  attended by CARI Project representatives  from Abuja and they expressed full support and expressed satisfaction with the commitment of benefiting communities towards taking full ownership of the project.

The training component of Project, which focuses on financial management, nutrition, improved parboiling techniques and economics has commenced immediately after the successful mobilization of communities.
