2018 World Water Day: Succour Comes to Sabuwar Kaura

…….. as Women step up Water management on World water day!!
As Rahila Ali rushed back home from school on the afternoon of Thursday, 22nd March 2018, she could hardly contain her excitement. It was World Water Day! She knew this because it was the day a solar powered borehole constructed in her village, Sabuwar Kaura in Gwarzo LGA of Kano State in Northern Nigeria,

would be handed over to 3 neighbouring communities harbouring about 45,000 beneficiaries by WOFAN.
For the first time in her life; she was going to see water flow from a faucet. Rahila is only 8 years old but she knows the trouble that goes with getting water for domestic and other uses. So, even at such a young age, she knew that on this day, succour had finally come to Sabuwar Kaura.
“My sisters and I used to go to a pond about 2 kilometres from our house to fetch water for domestic use”, she explained as she joined other children and community members at the newly completed water point to wait for its commissioning.
She also explained that if they needed water for drinking, they had to go even further to get water from a manually operated borehole in the next village about 12 Kms- (Moda Madadi, which was also constructed and donated by WOFAN in 2016).
She said, “It used to take so much time and it makes us go to school late. Sometimes, we miss school completely because of long queues at the borehole.”
And, her joy knew no bounds when she had the opportunity to drink water from the water point after it was handed over to the district head of the community popularly known as Sarkin Madadi, Muhammad Lawal Inuwa. She was so excited she did not look for a container; she drank from her palms. “Thank you WOFAN for constructing this water point she said with a sigh. Thank you also for bringing dignity and improved livelihood to women and girls in Sabuwar Kaura”, she enthused after drinking from the water point.
WOFAN had marked the 2018 World Water Day with the handover of the solar powered water point with reticulation to serve the over45,000 beneficiaries in Sabuwar Kaura and its environs by serving the people’s domestic, agricultural and livestock needs. It will also help to uplift the socio-economic status of women in the benefiting communities.
WOFAN also used the occasion to introduce maintenance-free irrigation pumps and hand-operated rice transplanters to promote climate-smart agriculture and reduce production costs of smallholder farmers which matches the 2018 world water day theme of Save Water, Save Nature!!
In her speech on the occasion of the 2018 World Water Day and handover of the water project to Sabuwar Kaura community, WOFAN’s Execitive Director, Hajia Salamatu Garba disclosed that community development is meaningful when all members of the community, including women and girls are fully integrated. This is in line with SD goals of taking every one along, at all times and every where, which in this case she refers to “access to safe drinking water”. A further reaction to the 2018 Water day event indicated that “This is how community development is meaningful; integrate women into every fabric of it. Technology has no biological prerequisites as both women and men can construct implement and benefit from it”.

As part of activities marking the day, members of the community presented a gender, livestock and water management role play. And the central message of the role play was the access to safe drinking water, irrigation facilities for climate-smart farming as well as control over our natural and human resources have given us more respect, dignity and self esteem.
