The ED, who was represented by WOFAN’s Project Manager, explained that the capacity of farmers would be built through training on good agronomic practices (GAP) as well as demonstration of best production technologies on designated demonstration plots so that the trained farmers can observe the technologies, replicate same on their respective farms and also become Peer trainers to fellow farmers on the various skills acquired.
“Here, the advantages to the farmers are twofold: first, farmers will have access to high quality, unadulterated inputs, affordable and direct linkage to the input dealers thereby making inputs timely at the door steps of the farmers”.
One of the benefiting farmers, Malam Ishak Mallam, from Gwarzo LGA, expressed confidence that with the kind of training and support they are already getting from WOFAN and KNARDA, farmers like him will experience some of the best harvests of their lives this season.
In his remarks, the District head of Gwarzo stated that, “WOFAN has shown us how to transplant our rice to get higher yields, manage our soils appropriately to get better results. I am going to adopt these new methods and I am sure that with this extra support in terms of all the good agricultural practices, I am going to get a very good harvest”.
The aim of WOFAN’s support to sustainably scale up rice production among farmers, improve processing and other post-harvest management strategies, thereby increasing profit, particularly by preserving the environment while encouraging consumption of local rice and reducing importation of Rice as supported the government of Nigeria and the UNDP/GEF project.
