2020 International Women’s Day: WOFAN Donates Rice and Groundnut Mills to 1,200 Women in Kano, Katsina, Jigawa and Kaduna States

training

On the occasion of the 2020 International Women’s Day (IWD), 1,200 women from Kano, Katsina, Jigawa and Kaduna States of Northern Nigeria got mini rice mills and groundnut oil mills to grow their businesses and improve their opportunities at becoming better entrepreneurs, contributing more to the Nigerian economy.

The women, who are smallholder farmers and processors, had formed groups of 30 members each to pull their resources together to improve their opportunities along the agricultural value chain in their respective communities. These groups had received support from WOFAN and International Agencies such as the United States Africa Development Foundation (USADF) to build processing centres where the women met to process and market rice and groundnut oil in groups.
This has helped to increase their output and income tremendously as they have upped their processing capacities to thousands of kilograms of rice from mere mudus (measures) and hundreds of litres of groundnut oil from just a few bottles.
And, on the occasion of the 2020 IWD, WOFAN procured 40 mini rice mills and groundnut oil extraction mills and commenced the distribution of the mills to women groups from the four states to boost opportunities already created by the processing centres.
The women groups were also trained on the servicing and maintenance of the mills as well as the basic entrepreneurial skills for effective and efficient management of the mills as profitable ventures.
Each of the rice mills has a milling capacity of three tons per day while the groundnut mill can extract 220 litres of groundnut oil per day. Use of the mills will upgrade the women centres from micro-mini to small and medium scale enterprises level thereby increasing opportunities for the women in line with the theme of the 2020 IWD which is #EachforEqual.
Celebration of the 2020 IWD and distribution of the mills, which took place in the Women Community Centre, Tofa, Kano State, was witnessed by Traditional and religious leaders, local government representatives and eminent personalities from the benefiting states.
